As they parked on the gravel drive of the small, bucolic house, Allie’s attention was intuitively drawn to a marshy area to the right of the dwelling.  Almost as if on cue, a white egret emerged from the water and circled the truck before disappearing into the tree line behind the house.

Jaxon appeared puzzled by yet another appearance of the mysterious bird, but he chose not to make eye contact with Allie. They exited the truck, neither saying a single word.  Standing on the front gallery of the house, Allie took a deep breath, silently checked over her shoulder for the egret, and knocked on the door.  She all at once felt sure this was the moment she had been dreading all morning.
